Five Tips to Successfully Move Blogs from Blogger to WordPress

by admin on May 29, 2009

If you have noticed the big gap in between my last few posts, that is because I got a lot of challenges moving this blog from Blogger to WordPress. This process really took a lot of time and patience because of a lot of unforseen concerns that popped out like crazy.

So if you are planning to do the same for your blog, check out my five simple tips on how to get this done right away:

1. Keep a list of your login credentials in one place.

Take your pick. You can manually write all your usernames and passwords in a notebook or have it saved in an excel document. You can also keep it in your email, you just have to make sure that no one can access your email aside from you alone.

Why did I mention this? I got a problem with this one when I cannot remember my username and password for a certain account that needs to be accessed for the transfer. You can just imagine the hassle it caused me and my outsourced partner when it took me so long before I figured out the needed details.

2. Write a migration plan.

It would’ve saved a lot of time if we only had a written procedure on how to get everything done together with the measures to use if there were challenges or changes in the process. Do not just rely on chat sessions and hope that everything that was talked about will be followed to a T.

3. Research on the hosting service that you will get for your self hosted blog.

My boyfriend and I are already settled with the idea to get Company X for this blog’s hosting since he mentioned that he had a great experience doing business with them (in some of his blogs too).

But I will never forget how slow they eventually worked things for us. The answers were delayed for almost 3 business days and up. It even came to a point that we do not know if we can still get an answer in the email as we waited for weeks

4. Outsource when needed.

Fork over some money to outsource the transfer instead of wasting time in trial and error on how to do it well. Nuff said.

5. Extend your patience all the time.

After the transfer, you may have to update and categorize all of the posts, bring back all the widgets and check the settings of your blog. If you need to do it manually, do it now. Don’t procrastinate or else you will not see the immediate results.

These tips came out after I experienced having to go through all the 95 posts one by one just to type in their tags and assign categories for each post. If I hadn’t maintained my patience, I would not have finished by now. :)

Have you been in this situation when you started blogging? Tell us more about it.

For the meantime, feel free to share some of your additional tips to maintain sanity while doing this whole transfer from Blogger to WordPress.

Glad to see you finally got everything up and going. Your theme looks nice and clean. I am thinking of doing the same thing with moving blogger to wp. Right now I am expermenting with using wordpress on a hosting service that offers free hosting. Unfortunately, I am stuck on the up load of wordpress. The free version does not offer one click upload. So I have ended up with an undetermined database error. Looks like I need to start all over. Well anyway thanks for the tips.

hmm.. moving from blogger to wordpress, never done that before.
Did blog on blogger before, but never really satisfied with it.

When I had the chance to lay my hands on a web-hosting service, I started a new wordpress-powered blog.

Anyway, those tips are informative enough for me, since I’m actually doing the same as your #1 tips ;-)

I made that move not too long ago and it took FOREVER. Glad to see you have some tips for this. Only problem I had was with exporting the posts. It wouldn’t wouldn’t upload to my new self-hosted wordpress. I had to upload the posts to a wordpress.com account first adn then export the posts from the wordpress.com account and then upload them to the selfhosted wordpress. Of course it took me almost a week to figure that out. I’m very happy that i moved though.
