Some Interesting Earth Day Trivia

by Online Diva on April 23, 2010

I may have work this week, and not really fulfilled my promise of joining this year’s Earth Day celebration, but let me share with you some interesting facts about Earth day from Mahalo.com:

  • First celebrated in San Francisco, California
  • First suggested by peace activist John McConnell to be held on March 21, the day of the March equinox
  • Later suggested by Senator Gaylord Nelson, to be celebrated on April 22
  • Saint Francis is the patron saint of ecologists
  • World Environment Day also held on June 6
  • It takes one million years for glass to decompose in a landfill
  • Every hour, Americans discard 2.5 million plastic bottles
  • If every American household switched to compact florescent light bulbs, the energy saved could power an entire city
  • Air quality has improved since 1970, with the main pollutant levels, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, carbon monoxide, lead and particulates like soot and smoke, falling by 64 percent

That was a handful of new information for me. Well, I will share some of my earth friendly living tips on my other blog. Don’t worry, I will announce it here as soon as it is published.

I just realized that there are a lot of Earth day celebrations this week, like street parties, street concerts and most of those activities that can be enjoyed for free.

How about you? How did you go about your Earth Day celebration?
